The Greek word for “Icon” is “Αγιογραφία” which can be separated into two words:

Άγιο means Holy or not of this world (Heavenly).
Γράφω means to write.

In reality, icons are not some artwork. Icons are not a creation of the imagination. Icons are in fact writings of holy events. Icons are to assist us in our worship. Icons are windows into heaven which helps us to focus on the divine things.
